- Even though the place seemed small, we still spent 2 hours there and learned lots.
- They had several age appropriate scavenger hunts available at the zoo entrance, even an adult version.
Cons:
- Many of the enclosures are up high, so you will need to pick up your little ones quite a bit. They do have some steps you can move around but just come prepared to get a good arm workout.
- Just like at a zoo, there are going to be some reptiles you won’t see because they are hiding in their enclosure.

This place was packed with outdoor fun. The play area is on the smaller side but my kids LOVED it! They ran around chasing each other, going down all the slides and running around on the Tree Top Trail. Then we found some fun walking paths in the woods and discovered a fort building area. After we explored the play area, we hopped on our bikes and rode over the Coon Rapids Dam and traveled around the many paved biked trails that were throughout the park. We ended our time in the Gateway Center building that had some live animals to look at (turtles, a salamander, fish, snakes, etc.), comfortable seating, educational displays about the wildlife in the park, and a small play area for kids.
Other general information: There are lots of bathrooms in the area that are clean and have baby changing tables. There are also lots of picnic tables and places to sit and watch your munchkins play. Enjoy the outdoors in a clean, fun environment!

Shoreview Commons Park
4580 Victoria Street
Shoreview, MN 55126
This park has everything you can possibly think of for your kids to have a great time. There is something for toddlers to teens and everyone in between. We spent a couple hours there and the only reason why we left is because we were all hungry. There are several different playgrounds that kids can climb, swing, run, jump, and slide on. There are paths to walk and soccer fields to play on. They even have a small skate park that kids can ride on with their skateboards, skates, bikes, or scooters (bring helmets). We decided that when we go again we would bring scooters and lunch so we can stay longer.
For parents, there is lots of seating (picnic tables, benches, and Adirondack chairs) available throughout the park. They also have bathrooms, water fountains, and a beautiful flower garden to walk through. You won’t be disappointed and neither will your kids.

I know I usually recommend places in Minnesota, but this one isn’t too far of a drive to northwestern Wisconsin to Trego. My family and I decided to do an overnight on the Namekagon River, starting at Hayward Landing and making our way back to Jack’s Canoe Rental in Trego. We have rented canoes through Jack’s a few times and have never been disappointed. You can rent canoes, kayaks, and tubes plus the price includes shuttle service to the landing you want to start at, as well as life jackets.
The river is mostly calm with a few areas of class 1 rapids. The rapids are enough to add a little excitement and if you are a first-time canoer you may have some difficulty. However, I wouldn’t let it deter you from giving it a try, just do your best to avoid the big rocks. There are campsites sprinkled along the way, individual and group sites. Just be aware that they are first come first serve so if you are planning on camping make sure you take the first open campsite that is close to where you want to stop, otherwise you may end up doing what we had to do. We ended up paddling 25 miles out of 30 the first day because the groups sites we were shooting for were taken so we had to keep traveling further down the river. We ended up at a larger campsite that included several other campsites at Earl Park Landing. It worked out fine, but it was exhausting doing so many miles in one day.
It is a beautiful river to paddle down, and we saw lots of animals. We saw deer, beavers, turtles, eagles, chipmunks, and what we thought was a mink or otter. We traveled down this river when our son was around 6 months old, again when he was 3, and now is 11. So, if you come prepared and take the proper precautions you can certainly make this a fun family trip for all ages.

We are part of the East Central Regional Library.
There are 14 locations, we frequent Rush City, Cambridge, and North Branch locations the most.
We have started going to the library every couple of weeks since we started homeschooling. They offer a great deal to the community through various activities and programs that they hold at their various locations . We have participated in Lego Club, taken part in some classes held by some wonderful volunteers, and taken advantage of their vast array of books and DVDs.
Currently we are taking part in their summer reading program called “Color Our World”. On their website you can find their locations, what events they are holding at each location, and check out their online catalog.

Besides going places, I am constantly on the search for special activities. For instance, Light the Torch Adventures is holding a Knights and Fair Maiden event where kids can learn about medieval times at the Isanti County Historical Society. The local library also has lots of free events for kids to participate in like Lego Club and reading challenges. I usually find most of the events we participate in on Facebook, I would recommend joining homeschool groups for your state.
Where do you like to go with your kids in order to get out of the house?
